My neighbor has a Minn Kota trolling motor for sale (I think he just doesn't want to GIVE it away). It's an older model but it appears to be in good shape, no prop dings, and it runs. It's only 17 lbs thrust but he only wants $15. I also know he'll take less. PM me if interested. Ed.

Xmas Present to Myself
So for a present to myself I'm thinking about getting myself a fly outfit. I'm as green as it gets when it comes to fly fishing. My experience goes as far as watching someone tie some flies. I've been looking into a set up that is quality yet affordable and am thinking about pulling the trigger on the Redington Crosswater. My budget would be around $150 and from reviews, this seems to be the ticket. Just looking for something that I can learn to cast with and hopefully have some fun with trout, reds, snook, bass and what not......eventually. Any of you guys have opinions on this set up or others?

Recent Tides/Water Levels
I usually follow the tides and water levels daily to get a better idea of the conditions and what is happening, even though I don't fish every day. Using the link below (click on FL, then click Old Port Tampa), which shows the predicted vs. observed water levels for Old Port Tampa, the water levels have been much higher than predicted lately. As of writing this, the water is over 1' higher than predicted, and won't come close to dropping to the negative low as predicted. I understand that predictions are just that, and will vary based on a variety of factors (wind, pressure, etc.) but this seems a bit odd. Even last week, when winds were of the N/NE/NW variety, water levels were still high and have been so for at least the last week and a half.
I was just curious if anyone (the Beagle perhaps) has any insight, thoughts, etc.

Recently purchased NEW Canon PowerShot Elph110HS
Just bought this from Office depot and can't return due to being outside of their 14 day return window. I took about 5 test shots with it and it has been sitting in the box ever since. I am selling because I was given a Canon PowerShot S100 for x-mas (early).

N Skyway pier 11-23-12
Took my son and father in law out to north skyway for father in laws 72nd birthday on Friday 11-23-12. Used Med and large shrimp, and frozen Squid on 1/0 Circle hook rigged carolina style with 1/2 oz egg sinker. Also used a premade snapper rig with pyramid on bottom that really produced. Fished from 10 am to 4pm caught and released 100+ fish. Also tried fresh caught live green backs casted out and also drifted with tide with no results. The best fishing was directly at the bottom of the pier.
This will be a birthday my father in law wont forget. Fishing was catching non stop. We caught Grunts, Black Sea bass, Gag Grouper, Pinfish, Puffers, and the cutest little Pompano youve every seen. The majority of the catch was Black Sea Bass, with Grunts in close second. Then pinfish, Puffer, and Gag's. Used 5 dozen shrimp and 2 frozen pouches of squid.
Black Sea Bass ran 4" to 8" with 2 keepers at 12". Seen a guy beside us also catching them on motor oil colored plastic tipped jig.
Grunts ran 6" to 13".
Pinfish where typical pinfish same with puffer.
Gag was 10" and 13"
Pomp was as pictured.

Surprise Beach Catch-For Me
I fished the beach for flounder from 7:30 to 9:00 this morning and caught this pompano. Very odd for me while fishing just for beach flounder. Also caught 8 beach flounder for the jetty Boys.![]()

I have been doing very well when it comes to sightcasting reds in the 18-26" range, however I have had many shots at fish larger than that but my presentations always seem to get completely ignored. When i see a larger fish should I try slinging a larger fly at them? Maybe a large crab pattern, or even a baitfish pattern how would you approach a fish in the 30+" range?

First Fishing This Month
Took the boat out for the first time this month. Old Pa. friend went with me to some rock piles in the center of the bay. We went through 5 dozen shrimp quickly catching smaller snapper, grunt and sheepshead.
I could not get excited and spent much of my time working on tidying up the boat, gear and changing sonar configurations. Let my friend catch one after another.
Friend cleaned and took all the fish while I drank beer at the marina. Frankly, that was the best part for me.
Maybe I can focus on cobia or something a bit more interesting than fish fodder?

FWC Meeting Dec 5 and 6
FWC to meet Dec. 5-6 in Apalachicola
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will meet Dec. 5 and 6 in Apalachicola to discuss Florida’s saltwater fishery, including possible game fish and sport fish designations and oyster populations in Apalachicola Bay; boating issues; hunting matters, including two new wildlife management areas; alligator harvesting; imperiled species updates and plans; and more.
The Wednesday-Thursday meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. both days in the Franklin County Courthouse, 33 Market Street, and is open to the public. Anyone wishing to address specific issues or items not on the agenda will be allowed to speak according to established guidelines.
After review of consent agenda items on the first day of the meeting, Executive Director Nick Wiley will present the director’s report.
Next on Dec. 5, FWC Commissioners will take up marine fisheries issues, including updates from the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council meetings, the 2013 Gulf of Mexico gag grouper recreational season, Atlantic black sea bass management changes, game fish and sport fish definitions and staff reports on flounder and oysters in Apalachicola Bay.
In a draft rule hearing, the Commission will discuss possibilities for the 2013 Gulf of Mexico gag grouper recreational season.
In a final public hearing, the Commission will consider changes to black sea bass management in Atlantic state waters. The proposed change would modify state recreational size and bag limits and commercial regulations to be consistent with federal rules.
The Commission also will consider a conservation measure creating game fish and sport fish definitions that could later be applied to some of Florida’s fisheries.
Flounder and oyster issues follow.
Also on Wednesday, staff will report on two boating-related topics.
First, they will review a proposed ordinance regulating the anchoring and mooring of non-live-aboard vessels outside of public mooring fields in Stuart/Martin County. Commission approval is necessary before the community can enforce its ordinance. This is the final ordinance under a five-community anchoring and mooring pilot program in Florida.
The other boating-related issue is a proposed rule amendment to the Okeechobee Waterway Boating Restricted Area.
When Commissioners reconvene on Dec. 6, law enforcement and legal staff will present the FWC’s award for Prosecutor of the Year.
Next, Commissioners will consider expanding hunting and fishing opportunities and public access on nearly 6 million acres of the FWC’s wildlife management area (WMA) system. Most noteworthy is the proposed addition of two new WMAs in its Southwest Region for the 2013-14 hunting season.
The Commission will address proposed amendments that would allow a quota permit holder to take a different guest each day of a quota hunt. Also, hunters would receive reinstatement of their preference points only if they electronically returned their unused quota permit 10 days or more prior to the first day of their quota hunt. Such returned permits would be reissued to other hunters on a weekly basis, instead of once a month.
Staff will update Commissioners on a statewide alligator harvest program and seek guidance for any needed improvements.
Staff from the FWC’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation will explain how listing and managing threatened and endangered species works in Florida. This presentation will focus on species that are state or federally listed, and on the FWC’s collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conserve imperiled species. Staff will also update Commissioners on a modified Imperiled Species Management Plan for 61 state-listed species. The new approach uses a plan that combines multi-species conservation strategies with species-specific action plans, and includes ongoing stakeholder involvement.
Discussions on automatic vessel registration and recreational license changes and an update on the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network follow.
At the end of the meeting on both days, the public can comment on items not on the agenda.

Big Trout are here
I waded Pinellas point area today on the incoming from 11-2, which also coincided with the major. Using Mirrorlure Lil johns in the shrimp like color on a 1/8 oz mission jig head I caught and released about a dozen trout but the quantity was not the story; it was the size.
My first fish which came on about my second cast came halfway out of the water and shook her big bucket head like a monster snook. I though for sure it was a big snook by the way it fought. After a couple runs with drag pulling and a few more jumps I got her within 6 feet or so. Just close enough to know it was better than my personal best (currently at 25 inches). About that time one more head flip and POP out comes the jig head right at me. Oh well, I didn't have a camera other than my iPhone and wasn't about to try that again.
I caught several more trout in the low 20s, a few short reds and the rest were short trout in the 10-12 inch range. All fish released back into the stock since I was hoping for a mid slot red for some blackened redfish, hush puppies and red beans and rice with a cold beer of course.
The big trout were in with the mullet and they were feisty.

Flounder report... and something to make you feel smarter.
Went out sunday on the yak and had a pretty good day on the water. Caught 9 flounder and 3 sheepshead. 7 keeper flounder and 1 keeper sheepshead... no trout which surprised me although one nice one spit the hook close to the yak.
The real story was how incredibly dumb I can be. the first keeper was a sheepshead which i wound up putting on one of the old fashioned string stringers i had brought... not an easy task by the way if you have never tried (no real access from the mouth to gills). So, then I catch a keeper flounder... well, in the process of trying to get him on the stringer I manage to totally lose all conscious thought and just let the stringer slide out of my hand... down it goes into the water with the sheepshead. Water happened to be deep where I was so just had to watch it go bye bye (i was in waders so no chance to go after it which i wouldn't have done anyway at that temp).
Well, I curse myself for a few minutes then find some extra rope I brought and create a make-shift stringer then attach that to the yak. I drag the flounder around all day but decide since it was a pain in the butt to put the fish on that I just kept the rest of the keepers in a bucket with a little water in it (like Andy told me he does).
Well, I head in and start to load the kayak and notice... no stringer. At some point it came unhooked from the yak so there went the biggest of the keeper flounder. I never cease to amaze myself at how dumb I can be... thank goodness most of the keepers were in the bucket... went home with six fish... instead of 8.
oh well, would have taken that total before the day started so can't complain. More the feeling of doing stupid stuff really.

Pew @ work!
Pew is not only out to destroy fishing in the United States, but world wide. Pew, as well as EDF, must be stopped.

"The Pew Environmental Group is on a mission to create 15 massive marine sanctuaries by 2020. And the group is nowhere close to done. Pew helped spearhead the campaign to establish the reserve, which includes an area the size of Spain closed off to all fishing. The nonprofit was also instrumental in establishing the other largest marine reserves in the world: two near the northwest Hawaiian Islands and the Marianas Trench in 2009, and another encompassing the Chagos Archipelago, a string of islands and coral atolls in the Indian Ocean, in 2010. All told, the amount of ocean set aside from extractive activities adds up to 868,000 square miles -- an area larger than Greenland. And the group is nowhere close to done"

Kings !
Just got another report from a buddy of mine.....He tore up the kings yesterday.
He fish's about 5 miles offshore between Longboat and Anna Maria. He use's large shrimp flatlined, and live bluerunners on a kite. He was landing fish in the 25-35lb size pretty regular. Had a few big ones that broke off as well.
This is the 2nd report that I heard in the last week from guys tearing them up out there.

TFO and Redbone rod
Stock pile of rods getting a bit to large.
1. TFO Spinning rod 7ft med action. Rod is in great shape grip is a little dirty, $50.
2. Redbone 7ft Med lite Spinning Rod with Diawa Fuego 2500 loaded with 10lb Power Pro. In great shape used very little excellent setup very well balanced, $150

New tank and floor
Hello all. It's been a while since I've been on. Work has been very busy. I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.
I had my 77 mako 231 restored last year and it did not go well......the tank that was installed was old, very dirty and 1/2 the size agreed on. I had the tank cleaned twice ( thanks Absolute tanking cleaning) but I'm still having to replace my filters every few trips and my range has been sacrificed.
My floor was solid except for a few spots in the stern which the shop replaced but new gel on top of a old floor that flexes is not a good combination, this has caused the new gel to crack.
I have learned this will continue unless I replace the floor. My thought process is to have the tank and floor done at the same time. (Open to suggestions)
Can anyone recommend a good shop in the Tampa area. I live in tampa the boat is in Bradenton so I'm willing to travel for good work and a good price.
Just in case anyone is wondering why I'm not going back to the shop. Well the entire process was a nightmare with many other issues and I didn't feel confident leaving my boat there and now the shop has closed. Go figure.

an idea for those who have had property stolen
jjwaterside luckily had his property recovered. Others usually are not so lucky.
I have had something I have used for several years that I met the owner of the company earlier this year, spent some time talking to them about what they had coming with improvements. They were very great to meet and work with and they have completed some minor updates to their products. They are going to be involved in the Captain Mel Classic as a sponsor of the event.
